Over the years, Cleveland has established itself as a must-visit destination for beer lovers. Breweries and pubs have sprung up across the city, giving aficionados (and those new to the taste) easy access to great local brews. Here are some of our favorites.
- Midwest Red IPA by Masthead Brewing Company
Masthead Brewing Company is renowned as one of Cleveland’s best. It only makes sense that they also make one of the city’s best beers.
Their Midwest Red IPA is a well-balanced double red ale that unfurls to reveal notes of stone fruit and tangerine amid the swirling hops and malt. It’s so great, it won the 2017 GABF Bronze Medal. Drink responsibly, as Midwest Red IPA packs 6.3 percent of alcohol content, which can easily knock off novice drinkers.
- Barrel Aged Clash of Clans by Avon Brewing Company
Looking for something stronger? Avon Brewing Company, located a short drive outside Cleveland, has something to offer. Their Irish red ale, so aptly named Barrel Aged Clash of Clans, might be to your taste.
Aged in a rye barrel, Barrel Aged Clash of Clans might sound intimidating (especially with its 10.5 percent alcohol content), but it’s a very smooth brew with just enough whiskey and malt.
- Eliot Ness by Great Lakes Brewing Company
Great Lakes Brewing Company is another one of Cleveland’s great breweries. They’ve always had solid offerings, mastering European styles while experimenting with their IPAs.
Eliot Ness is an ideal spokesperson for Great Lakes. It speaks of the brewery’s inventiveness and creativity. This beautiful amber lager is a smooth drink, nice and creamy, revealing toasty caramel notes that gets better with every sip (or chug).
- Kernel of Truth by Akronym Brewing
Hailing from Akron, south of Cleveland, is Akronym Brewing’s Kernel of Truth. This American lager looks like molten gold and packs a lot of flavor.
Clean, crisp, and incredibly well-made, Kernel of Truth is a refreshing brew that features notes of lemondrop hops and corn, two of its primary ingredients. This is definitely a beer for a summer you will always remember or a nice afternoon relaxing at the back porch.
- Caught in the Rain by Saucy Brew Works
Saucy Brew Works only opened in 2017, but it has taken Cleveland and the rest of Northern Ohio by storm. Last year, Cleveland.com named this brewery the best among the rest. You can say that we were all caught in the rain…
Part of Saucy Brew’s Drifter Series, Caught in the Rain is a lovely sour IPA that shines with its pineapple and vanilla flavors, all balanced to perfection. This is a downpour where you wouldn’t mind if you get drenched.
